Hypertension, Depression, Anxiety are among the most common chronic health conditions Aussies are suffering.  High cholesterol and asthma also rank highly, according to a new report by the Department of Health and NPS Medicine Wise. Medical statistics also show one in two (50%) Australians are estimated to have at least 1 of 8 selected common chronic conditions: cancer, cardiovascular disease, mental health conditions, arthritis, back pain and problems, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and diabetes.
  • Nearly 1 in 4 (23%) Australians are estimated to have two or more of these conditions.
  • Collectively, chronic conditions account for:
  • 61% of total disease burden
  • 37% of hospitalisations

In addition, reports indicate that one third of Australians are overweight.

How can Yoga practices assist in preventing obesity and poor health?

Regular practice of Yoga Asanas ( postures) and Prana Yama ( energy realignment through breath control) enhances physical strength, nerve function, bio energy ( prana), overall physical health and mental wellbeing. This in turn develops discipline and makes you more mindful of your habits including eating habits. Maintaining a posture for half to one minute not only strengthens the body but also burns calories with very little wear and tear on the body.Practicing Yoga postures and breathing using Prana Yama technique reduces anxiety, improves physical and mental health. Just 30 minutes a day would be enough. Regular practice is important. Issues such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Back pain, ADHD , Varicose veins can be managed with suitable Yoga Asanas(poses). Studies done at the University of Hawaii has also reported that 12 minutes of Yoga gives you benefits of 2 hours of deep sleep.!!!
