After 25 years of teaching Yoga, the other day I was asked by a young lady if she should consider yoga or Pilates. This question made me realise the lack of understanding of what Yoga is, thanks to many teachers from India ( the land of Yoga) and overseas, who make Yoga appear like a calisthenics session.
So I thought I would share this article with all of you.
Yoga and Pilates are both popular forms of exercise that promote wellbeing. While they may share some similarities, there are also key differences between the two practices that cater to different needs and preferences. In this essay, we will compare and contrast Yoga and Pilates to help individuals decide which practice may be better suited to their lifestyle.
Yoga reaches your soul – Promotes physical, mental & spiritual well being
One of the main differences between Yoga and Pilates lies in their origins and philosophies. Yoga has its roots in ancient Indian traditions and encompasses a holistic approach to health that focuses on achieving balance and harmony in the mind, body, and spirit. In short, the word Yoga means merging your mind with the inner divine.
It combines physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation, sense control, purity, restraint to promote relaxation, flexibility, strength, and inner peace.
Pilates helps your body
On the other hand, Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates as a form of rehabilitation and physical conditioning for injured dancers. It is a more structured and systematic approach to exercise that emphasizes core strength, stability, and alignment. Pilates focuses on performing precise movements with control and precision, often using specialized equipment such as reformers, cadillacs, and barrels to enhance the workout.
In terms of physical benefits, both Yoga and Pilates can improve flexibility, strength, posture, and overall body awareness. However, their emphasis on different aspects of fitness sets them apart. Yoga is known for its ability to increase flexibility by stretching and lengthening muscles, while Pilates focuses on building core strength and stability through controlled movements. Pilates also targets specific muscle groups, such as the abdominals, glutes, and back, to improve overall strength and alignment.
Another key difference between Yoga and Pilates is the focus on breathing. In Yoga, breath awareness is an essential component of the practice, with specific breathing techniques used to deepen the postures and calm the mind. In contrast, Pilates uses lateral breathing to engage the core muscles and support the movements, but it does not place as much emphasis on breathwork as Yoga does.
Pilates also offers a variety of classes, including mat-based and equipment-based sessions, as well as specialized classes for specific populations, such as prenatal or postnatal Pilates.
At Sanatana Yoga Academy, we focus on authentic Ashtanga Yoga given by Sage Patanjali
Furthermore, the styles and types of classes available in Yoga and Pilates can vary widely. Though Yoga includes a diverse range of practices, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and Bikram in modern-day society, the Yoga practitioner must know that the only Authentic Yoga is the 8 Limbs of Yoga ( Ashtanga Yoga) compiled by Sage Patanjali thousands of years ago. I am most fortunate that I could learn authentic Ashtanga Yoga principles from Sathya Sai Baba, enabling me to share Yoga with confidence. In short Ashtanga Yga help your mind connect with the spirit within you and also see the Divinity in all beings. This is the goal for all born as humans says Sathya Sai Baba.
Ultimately, the choice between Yoga and Pilates comes down to personal preference and fitness goals. If you are looking to improve flexibility, reduce stress, and connect with your inner self, Yoga may be the better option for you. On the other hand, if you want to build core strength, improve posture, and enhance athletic performance, Pilates may be more suitable for your needs.
In conclusion, both Yoga and Pilates are valuable forms of exercise that can benefit individuals of all ages and fitness levels. By understanding the differences between the two practices, you can make an informed decision about which one aligns with your goals and preferences. Whether you choose to practice Yoga, Pilates, or a combination of both, incorporating these mindful movements into your routine can lead to improved physical and mental well-being.
